There exists a new appearance package for the 2020 Corolla on the SE trim: “Nightshade.” All chrome is blacked out except for the badge on the nose, black non-directional wheels, and black door handles. I saw one on the freeway in silver the other day and it didn’t look too shabby.

But of course, while the top-trim XSE succeeds in selling some manuals, the Nightshade will sell zero. Why? It’s a CVT-only trim.

An appearance package for an economy car that is otherwise available with a stick, is somehow sold with no stick? Ain’t that America...

I guess there is some good news: the new color available for the XSE: Galactic Aqua.

Also enjoying being in my 30' s and daydreaming of one day being able to purchase... a damned Corolla. That's how you've made it.

I'm of the mindset that most modern cars look better with the chrome bits removed. That's a bummer about the transmission though.

I really like the look of the Corolla hatch. Aggressive without being overdone to the point of the Type-R (which I really like).

Hopefully they make a hot version soon, something rally inspired to tie-in with their WRC program. Corolla GR-Four All-trac!

Now that my wife has a Highlander and due to a mishap during the first trip through a car wash tunnel, I ended up bringing it in for service before the first oil change and ended up wandering the showroom only to find a Corolla with a manual transmission! It was a relatively stripped spec vehicle , so I’d never consider that example as a DD, but I was still pleasantly surprised to see a brand new 2020 with a manual transmission...

There’s a lot more story that I didn’t take pictures of, so I can’t do a proper writeup, but when they screwed up such that they had to keep my wife’s car overnight, they offered me a loaner and tried to put me in a Corolla hatch that was actually fairly nice . However, due to the car seat, I had to ask for something bigger, resulting in a Camry LE . That car was painfully sad and i t amazes me that anyone would buy one new, yet it is probably still the best-selling car in America. It’s the only modern automatic car I’ve driven since the Mazda 3 and it blew me away how bad it was. CVTs are far superior if you must have an automatic...

I once saw one in white with entirely black pillars (A, B and C) and roof; it looked stunning and original without resorting to the cliche Nissan floating roof thing that doesn’t look cool anymore. It kinda looked like a low top lounge shoe.

H igh down force edition - available only with the CVT. Kidding.. I actually saw one with that wing - I think that pic makes it look bigger than it is. It actually looks really  good in person.

With Mazda’s push upmarket and their only manual 3 starting at uncomfortably close to $30k, one of these might be my next ride if I decide to go new again. I just enjoy driving a manual too much.

Dealer installed option for either trim. I’m having my dealer install it on mine at my 10k service. That pic makes it look way bigger than it actually is.
